What is Local SEO, anyway?

Assuming you have a Local Business Website, local SEO is getting your Website ranking in Google in the first position when a user searches for your services.

In other words making sure your website shows up when user types “YOUR SERVICE” + “YOUR TOWN OR CITY”, for example, “Web Design in London“. The second part is optional, as usually, the browser uses your IP to Geo-locate the query,

There are around 200 factors that Google takes into account to Rank a Website. And it is crucial to send Google the right signals so it can happen the right way.

Before taking a look at the tips it is important to understand that when a user enters a term in the Google search bar what is really happening “under the hood” is a query to Google’s database, meaning that data is already there.  So the way Google “understands” your website after crawling it is crucial for Local SEO.

That being said a few of the factors for a better SEO are the following:

  1. How easy Google crawls your Website
  2. The Quality of your content.
  3. The Quality and Quantity of Backlinks (links from external sources pointing to your Website).
  4. How clear it is what you offer.

Create your Google My Business page

An absolute essential for Local SEO.

Create (or claim) your Google My Business Page. You will need to confirm your address via a postcard sent to your address. That will help your business show up in the Google Maps “7 Pack” search results.

Submit Your Website to Relevant Local Directories / Blogs / Forums

You can start with the most known and generic directories like Yelp or Hotfrog, Yellowpages. The Key here is to create “citations” which is a ranking factor, meaning, make sure all your data is up to date: Name, Address, Phone Number (a.k.a: NAP).

Pro Tip:  “Spy” your competitors  so you find out easily where they are listed, you can do it with a simple search query in Google, something like this:

“name of your competitor”

Get Reviews: Encourage your current customers to leave a Review about your services.

It is one of the most powerful “social proof”. If you are good at what you do or serve, make Google know. Encourage your customer to leave a review. Be natural and please, never fake it.

Send Social Signals to Google

Social networks like Instagram, Facebook, FourSquare can definitely help to boost your local SEO. Make sure to tag your location everytime you post an article, picture or video, in order to get all the local power they can give you.

Do A Quick SEO OnPage Audit

The basics here:

  • Clear Headings (H1-H6). Definitely, you need an H1 on every page.
  • Unique meta descriptions per page.
  • Your Content should contain your main keyword in a natural way.
  • Use a seo tool like screaming frog to help find out if you have any broken link.
  • Finally, connect your website with Google Search Console, to watch your website’s performance.
